Final Fantasy XIV Suspends Housing Demolitions Amidst LA Wildfires
Square Enix has temporarily halted automatic housing demolition timers in Final Fantasy XIV on North American servers due to the ongoing Los Angeles wildfires. This affects players on the Aether, Primal, Crystal, and Dynamis data centers. The suspension, implemented just one day after the resumption of demolitions, is a precautionary measure to accommodate players potentially impacted by the wildfires.
The game typically employs a 45-day auto-demolition system to free up housing plots for inactive players. This timer resets when the owner logs in, encouraging player engagement. However, Square Enix regularly pauses this system during significant real-world events to prevent unfair penalties for players facing disruptions. A previous pause, ending January 8th, was attributed to the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.
While a restart of demolitions was initially announced, the LA wildfires prompted this latest suspension, effective January 9th, 11:20 PM Eastern. No timeline has been provided for the resumption of the auto-demolition timers. Players on affected data centers can still reset their timers by visiting their properties.
This action reflects Square Enix's sensitivity to the impact of real-world events on its player base. The wildfires have also affected other events, including a postponement of the Critical Role Campaign 3 finale and the relocation of an NFL playoff game. The ongoing suspension adds to the eventful start of 2025 for Final Fantasy XIV players, who also recently benefited from a free login campaign.
