Funko Addresses Itch.io Shutdown Caused by BrandShield

Funko has issued a public statement regarding the temporary shutdown of Itch.io, allegedly triggered by its brand protection software, BrandShield. The company emphasized its strong support for the indie gaming community, stating its appreciation for indie developers and gamers.

Funko acknowledged that BrandShield flagged an Itch.io page mimicking the Funko Fusion development website, resulting in a takedown request. Crucially, Funko clarified that it did not request a complete takedown of Itch.io and expressed relief at the platform's swift restoration.

The company is now in private discussions with Itch.io to address the issue. Funko also thanked the gaming community for its understanding while the situation is resolved.

However, Itch.io owner Leaf provided further context on Hacker News, revealing the takedown resulted from a "fraud and phishing report," not just a simple takedown request. This report was sent to both Itch.io's host and registrar, leading to the automated shutdown of the entire domain, despite Leaf's immediate action to remove the offending page. Leaf also noted that Funko contacted his mother, a detail omitted from Funko's official statement.
