Gundam Breaker 4: A Deep Dive Review Across Platforms, Including Steam Deck Performance

Back in 2016, the Gundam Breaker series was a niche import title. The announcement of a global release for Gundam Breaker 4 in 2024 was a huge surprise, and now, having logged 60 hours across multiple platforms, I can confidently say it's a significant achievement for Western fans. No more importing Asian English releases! Gundam Breaker 4 boasts dual audio (English and Japanese) and multiple subtitle options (EFIGS and more), a significant leap for the franchise.

The Story: A Solid Foundation, But Not the Main Event

While the story has its highs and lows (occasionally lengthy pre-mission dialogue versus compelling character reveals later on), it effectively introduces newcomers to the series. The main characters are engaging, though my personal favorites appear later in the narrative. The first two chapters feel somewhat straightforward, but the story picks up considerably later.

The Real Star: Unparalleled Customization

Gundam Breaker 4's true strength lies in its incredible Gunpla customization. You can adjust individual parts (arms, weapons, etc.), even mixing and matching parts of different scales, including Super Deformed (SD) parts for truly unique creations. Builder parts add even more customization options, some with unique skills. EX and OP skills, dependent on your parts and weapons, further enhance strategic combat options. Ability cartridges offer additional buffs and debuffs.

Progression and Difficulty

Missions reward parts, materials for upgrading, and eventually, materials to increase part rarity. The game's difficulty is well-balanced; grinding isn't necessary for the standard difficulty, but three higher difficulties unlock later, significantly increasing the challenge. Optional quests offer additional rewards and fun gameplay modes, including survival mode.

Beyond the Basics: Paint, Decals, and Weathering

Customization extends beyond parts; you can adjust paint schemes, apply decals, and even add weathering effects for truly personalized Gunpla. The depth of customization is incredible, offering countless hours of enjoyment for Gunpla enthusiasts.

Gameplay and Combat: A Winning Formula

The combat is consistently engaging, even on normal difficulty. Weapon variety keeps things fresh, and the skill system adds strategic depth. Boss fights are exciting, with the unique presentation of bosses emerging from Gunpla boxes adding a fun touch. Targeting weak points, managing health bars, and overcoming shields are key elements of successful boss battles. I encountered only minor difficulties with specific boss weak points and AI in one particular fight.

Audio and Visuals: A Mixed Bag

Visually, the game is a mixed bag. Environments are somewhat lacking early on, but the Gunpla models and animations are beautifully rendered. The art style is distinct and performs well even on lower-end hardware. The music ranges from forgettable to excellent, though the absence of licensed anime music is a slight disappointment. Voice acting, however, is surprisingly good in both English and Japanese.

Bugs and Performance

I encountered minor bugs (save issues, a Steam Deck-specific crash), but nothing game-breaking. The game's performance is generally excellent, especially on PC. The Steam Deck version runs exceptionally well, even exceeding expectations.

Online Multiplayer: Pending Further Testing

Online multiplayer was not fully testable at the time of this review, but I will update this section once the PC servers are online and I've had a chance to test it thoroughly.

Platform Comparison: PC, Switch, and PS5

  • PC: Supports over 60fps, mouse and keyboard, and multiple controller options. Excellent Steam Deck performance.
  • PS5: Capped at 60fps, looks amazing.
  • Switch: Runs around 30fps, with visual downgrades compared to PS5. Assembly and diorama modes feel sluggish.

DLC: The Ultimate Edition Offers Extra Value

The DLC included in the Deluxe and Ultimate Editions offers additional parts and diorama content, enhancing the overall experience. The additional builder parts are particularly useful early on.

Final Verdict

Gundam Breaker 4 is a fantastic game, especially for Gunpla enthusiasts. While the story is enjoyable, the real draw is the unparalleled customization, engaging combat, and the sheer satisfaction of building your perfect Gunpla. The Steam Deck version is particularly impressive. Highly recommended, especially on PC or PS5.
