In the latest update for Fallout 76, Season 20, titled "The Ghoul Within," players are given the exciting opportunity to transform into a Ghoul and navigate the radiation-soaked landscapes of Appalachia. This update, announced by Bethesda on March 18, introduces a variety of ghoul-related features, mechanics, and new cosmetic options that enrich the gameplay experience and allow for unique C.A.M.P. redesigns.
To embrace your inner Ghoul, players must undertake the "Leap of Faith" questline. This journey leads to a new section of the Savage Divide, introducing players to new characters who aid in the transformation process known as Ghoulification. Once transformed, players gain access to exclusive Ghoul abilities, including Glow and Feral, alongside 30 new Ghoul-specific Perks, or "Gherks" as Bethesda refers to them.
The Feral ability replaces traditional hunger and thirst mechanics, instead using a Feral meter. The meter's status affects various gameplay boosts, with a significant shift when it reaches 0%: players gain a staggering +150% Melee Damage, but at the cost of -5 Endurance, -99 Charisma, -30 Max HP, -20 Max AP, and a drastic reduction in Hip-fire and V.A.T.S. Accuracy by -300%.
On the other hand, the Glow ability allows players to consume radiation, granting immunity to diseases and mutations, and even causing the player to emit a glow. This ability not only increases maximum health and heals damage but also enhances the effectiveness of Ghoul-exclusive Perks.
With 28 Perks to choose from and two new legendary perks tailored for Ghouls, players have ample options to customize their gameplay. However, Ghouls will not have access to Perks related to Hunger, Thirst, and Chem Resistance, as these are irrelevant to their new state.
A Day In The Life of A Ghoul
Navigating the wasteland as a Ghoul comes with its advantages, thanks to the new abilities and Gherks. However, it also presents challenges, such as hostility from factions like the Brotherhood of Steel, which can lock players out of certain questlines. To circumvent this, players can utilize disguises provided by a new NPC named Jaye, allowing interaction with previously inaccessible content.
If the Ghoul life doesn't suit you, reverting to human form is possible through the Character Screen, though this is a one-way decision. Players wishing to become Ghouls again must purchase the Ghoul Retransformation for 1000 Atoms.
Level 50 Character Boost and Season 20 Patch Notes
For those eager to dive into the action, the Level 50 Character Boost is now available for 1500 Atoms. This boost, part of the Season 20 update, equips players with the necessary perks and boosts to immediately engage with multiplayer features like Daily Ops, Public Events, and select story content.
The update also includes a range of bug fixes and balance adjustments, such as accessibility improvements, combat balancing, and weapon damage modifications. Bethesda has also teased the upcoming "The Big Bloom" update, set for April 29, as part of their season calendar.
Since its launch in November 2018, Fallout 76 has overcome its initial challenges and now boasts a "Mostly Positive" rating on Steam, with 76% of reviews being positive. The game is available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC, continuing to evolve with each new update.
