The long-running GTA 6 mapping project has surged into high gear following the release of Trailer 2, with one of its key members, Garza, telling IGN, "It really changes everything for us for the rest of the year." The excitement is palpable in the GTA 6 Mapping Discord, where the project's 370 members, soon to reach 400, are diving into the wealth of new details provided by the trailer.
"It's an information overload - it really changes everything for us for the rest of the year," Garza, who oversees the Discord server, emphasized to IGN. "We have so much new content to work on and we're really just getting started."
The GTA 6 Mapping Discord was established in the wake of the massive September 2022 leaks, which some fans believe Rockstar humorously nodded to at the start of Trailer 2. The project's aim is to create the most accurate GTA 6 map possible, a task that, prior to Trailer 2, relied heavily on those leaks and December 2023's Trailer 1. The latest map version, v0.049, released at the end of March by project lead DuPz0r, is now outdated due to the fresh information provided by Trailer 2.

Alongside confirming plot details, characters, and releasing 70 brand new GTA 6 screenshots, Rockstar unveiled images and information about the explorable areas in the state of Leonida, GTA 6's rendition of Florida. Confirmed locations from this week's reveal include Vice City, GTA 6's take on Miami, the tropical archipelago of Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga, a national landmark near the state's northern border.
The volunteers are meticulously analyzing the trailer to pinpoint the exact locations of everything shown, striving to align images of fictional settings with their real-world inspirations to refine GTA 6's map further. Once their efforts are complete, DuPz0r will release an updated map, which fans eagerly anticipate as their clearest glimpse yet into what GTA 6 will offer upon its release in May 2026.
Should Rockstar release more GTA 6 assets or gameplay footage before then, the volunteers are ready to delve back into their work. Only upon the game's release will they be able to compare their fan-crafted map against the actual game, revealing the accuracy of their endeavors.

However, looming over the GTA 6 mapping project is the threat of intervention by Rockstar's parent company, Take-Two. In March, a modder who had released a playable version of the GTA 6 map within GTA 5 was forced to halt all work following a takedown notice from Take-Two. This mod was based on the GTA 6 mapping project.
Last year, when I inquired about potential concerns regarding actions from Take-Two, Garza admitted to "some mild concern." He explained, "This project has been going on for quite some time with no direct disruption to our community. However, I always keep it into consideration if they intend on communicating with us in the future for any reason. We do not explicitly showcase leaked material in the map, so I do not believe they would take that down in particular. I believe they are aware that this project gathers popularity and interest in the game, since everyone wants to see how the world may look like. This can be one of the reasons why they haven’t done anything, since it's not too negative. If I were ever in the situation of receiving a cease and desist though, then I would respectfully cease and desist. As we get closer to a precise map, it may be possible to receive that notice in the future."
While we await further developments, there's plenty more to explore about GTA 6, including all the details we've uncovered so far and the fan theories emerging from Trailer 2 itself.
