When you begin a new game in Stardew Valley, you can adopt either a cat or a dog to join you on your farm. Initially, the game limited players to one pet per save file, but the 1.6 update changed that. To unlock the ability to have more pets, you must first max out your friendship level with your current pet.

To do this, ensure you fill their water bowl daily using your Watering Can, except on rainy or snowy days when it fills automatically. Additionally, pet them once a day; you'll know you've succeeded when a heart bubble appears above their head. You can monitor your pet's friendship level in the "Animals" tab of the pause menu.

Once the friendship meter is full, Marnie will send you a notification via mail about the chance to adopt additional pets at her shop, located south of your farm. If you haven't adopted a pet in your first year, you'll receive this notice at the start of Year 2.

How To Get Supplies for Pets in Stardew Valley

After choosing your new pets, head to Robin's carpentry shop in the northern part of Pelican Town to purchase Pet Bowls for each pet. These bowls not only provide water but also serve as a "home" for your pets, preventing their friendship meter from dropping. Neglecting this could lead to your pets running away, which would be both emotionally and financially costly.

Pet Bowls are listed under Robin's "Construct Farm Buildings" menu, costing 5,000g and 25 x Hardwood (harvested with a Copper Axe or better). It's advisable to build these before adopting your new pets to ensure no friendship points are lost.
