Rogue Loops: A Hades-Inspired Roguelike with a Twist
The upcoming indie roguelike, Rogue Loops, is generating buzz with its striking resemblance to Hades, both visually and in its core gameplay loop. However, Rogue Loops introduces a unique mechanic that sets it apart. While a release date hasn't been officially announced (currently slated for early 2025 on PC), a free demo on Steam offers a sneak peek.
The roguelike genre's recent surge in popularity has seen numerous interpretations, ranging from action-packed titles like Returnal to classic dungeon crawlers such as Hades and its sequel (currently in early access). Rogue Loops clearly draws inspiration from the latter, featuring a repeatedly traversed dungeon with randomly generated loot and ability upgrades, all presented from a top-down perspective.
While comparisons to Hades are inevitable, given its Steam trailer and demo, Rogue Loops distinguishes itself with a compelling twist: ability upgrades come with significant downsides.
Rogue Loops' Unique "Curse" System
This mechanic echoes Hades' Chaos Gates, which provide powerful upgrades at the cost of temporary detrimental effects. However, in Rogue Loops, these "curses" are more impactful and varied, potentially affecting the entire playthrough depending on player choices.
The game's narrative centers around a family trapped in a deadly time loop. Players navigate five distinct dungeon floors, battling unique enemies and bosses. As expected from a roguelike, each run unlocks procedurally generated upgrades, enabling players to craft diverse builds using both beneficial and detrimental buffs and debuffs.
While a precise release date remains elusive, the Steam page indicates a Q1 2025 launch. Until then, players can explore the first floor via the free demo. Other excellent roguelikes, including Dead Cells and Hades 2, offer satisfying alternatives in the meantime.
