Harry Potter: Magic Awakened EOS Announced, Guess The Spells Didn’t Work After All!

NetEase's Harry Potter: Magic Awakened, a collectible card role-playing game, is shutting down in select regions. The end-of-service (EOS) date for the Americas, Europe, and Oceania is October 29th, 2024. Players in Asia and certain MENA regions can continue playing.

Initially released in China in September 2021, the game saw a strong start domestically. A global launch followed in June 2022, but it failed to achieve the same level of success.

The game's decline is attributed to several factors. While initially praised for its engaging Clash Royale-inspired gameplay and immersive Hogwarts atmosphere, the developers' shift towards a pay-to-win model alienated many players. Reddit discussions highlight player frustration with changes to the reward system, which penalized skilled, free-to-play players in favor of those who spent money. Progression slowed significantly, and nerfs further dampened the experience.

The game has already been removed from the Google Play Store in the affected regions as of August 26th, 2024. However, players in unaffected regions can still experience the game's unique blend of card battles, wizard duels, dorm life, and Hogwarts exploration.
