James Gunn Confirms 'Absolutely Zero CG' in Superman’s Flying Face After TV Spot Raises Eyebrows

By MatthewApr 04,2025

DC Studios co-chief James Gunn has addressed the online buzz surrounding Superman's flying face after a new TV spot for the upcoming Superman movie sparked debate over the weekend. The 30-second video features two new clips: one showing Lex Luthor exiting a helicopter in a snowy wilderness, possibly in search of the Fortress of Solitude, and another of Superman, portrayed by David Corenswet, executing a barrel roll as he flies over an icy landscape towards an unknown destination.

PlayThe internet was quick to comment on the shot of Superman in flight, with some viewers noting that his face appeared unnaturally still amidst the billowing of his hair and cape. Speculation ranged from it being due to "wonky CGI" to other technical issues. However, Gunn took to Threads to set the record straight, responding to a fan who praised the spot but critiqued the CGI on Superman's face. Gunn clarified, "There is absolutely zero CG in his face. People’s faces can look different when you put a wide angle lens up close. The background plate in Svalbard is 100% real as is David." Svalbard, the Norwegian archipelago where part of the movie was filmed, provided the real backdrop for the scene.

This revelation confirms that the image of Superman's flying face, which some described as displaying a knowing smirk, is entirely natural, achieved without the use of CGI. Despite Gunn's clarification, fans continue to discuss and compare the shot to other flying scenes, such as that of Adam Warlock in Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Excitement for the Superman film, set to premiere on July 11, 2025, as the inaugural movie in the DCU's Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, remains high. IGN provides comprehensive coverage, including an explainer on all the DC Heroes and Villains in the new trailer, insights from James Gunn on Krypto being a less-than-ideal dog in the film, discussions on how Superman embodies the theme of hope, and more.
