James Gunn Explains Supergirl Title Change from 'Woman of Tomorrow'

By ZacharyMay 21,2026

Supergirl, previously titled Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, has been officially renamed Supergirl, as confirmed by DC Universe head James Gunn.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Gunn shared insights into the decision, mirroring the earlier rebranding of Superman: Legacy to simply Superman. He described a process called a “premorterm,” where the creative team anticipates potential pitfalls before filming begins. The original title, Superman: Legacy, came up during this discussion.

“I’m always refining,” Gunn stated. “We hold a premortem about two months before shooting. The team gathers and openly discusses what could lead to a project’s failure. We ask, ‘If it’s a complete flop, what choices are we making now that might cause it?’ This uncovers concerns people usually keep quiet, like doubts about casting or production delays.”

“During this, I questioned the title Superman: Legacy, which I had chosen myself. I’m tired of the superhero title format with a colon and subtitle. Plus, it felt backward-looking when we’re focused on the future, even though legacy is a theme in the film. Everyone agreed, so we changed it.”

Directed by Craig Gillesipe and written by Ana Nogueira, Supergirl stars Milly Alcock in the lead role. Details about the film remain scarce, as Alcock has stayed tight-lipped in recent interviews. However, A Minecraft Movie’s Jason Momoa has hinted at his eagerly awaited Lobo costume in the upcoming project, prompting a lighthearted response from Gunn.

Supergirl, no longer titled Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, is set to hit theaters on June 26, 2026.
