Bungie's highly anticipated sci-fi extraction shooter, Marathon, finally breaks its year-long silence with a developer update. Initially unveiled at the 2023 PlayStation Showcase, the game, a revival of Bungie's classic IP, has been shrouded in mystery until now.
Marathon: On Track for 2025 Playtests
Game Director Joe Ziegler confirmed the game is progressing well, undergoing significant revisions based on extensive player testing. While gameplay footage remains under wraps, Ziegler hinted at a class-based system featuring customizable "Runners" with unique abilities. He showcased two Runners, "Thief" and "Stealth," suggesting their abilities will align with their names.
Expanded playtests are planned for 2025, offering a wider player base the chance to experience the game. Ziegler urged fans to wishlist Marathon on Steam, Xbox, and PlayStation to demonstrate interest and facilitate communication about future updates.
A Modern Take on a Classic
Marathon is a fresh interpretation of Bungie's original trilogy, accessible to newcomers while offering nods to long-time fans. Set on Tau Ceti IV, players (Runners) compete for valuable alien artifacts in intense extraction matches, either solo or in teams of three. The game is designed with PvP at its core, emphasizing player-driven narratives within a larger overarching story.
While the original director, Chris Barrett, departed the project following allegations of misconduct, Ziegler assures fans that development continues, incorporating modern elements while staying true to the Marathon spirit. Cross-play and cross-save functionality will be available across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
Challenges and the Road Ahead
The development of Marathon hasn't been without its hurdles. Bungie's recent layoffs undoubtedly impacted the project's timeline. However, the developer update suggests the team is navigating these challenges and remains committed to delivering a compelling experience. While a release date remains unannounced, the promise of expanded playtests in 2025 offers a glimmer of hope for eager fans.
