By EmeryMay 27,2025

NetEase Games is making a significant shift in its Marvel Rivals post-launch strategy, aiming to shorten its seasons and introduce at least one new hero each month. This change is part of a broader effort to maintain and boost the live service momentum with its player base.

The new approach was hinted at during the Marvel Rivals Season 2 Dev Vision Vol. 5 video, which provided insights into the upcoming content. Season 2, launching on April 11, will feature Emma Frost as the new Vanguard at the outset, followed by Ultron mid-season. Both characters will bring fresh abilities to the game, keeping fans engaged. However, the most significant changes to the game's dynamics will kick off with Season 3.

In Marvel Rivals Season 3, NetEase plans to reduce season lengths from three months to two. This adjustment will accelerate major content updates while maintaining their commitment to releasing at least one new hero every half-season. The wait time between new heroes will be notably shorter starting from Season 3.

Marvel Rivals creative director Guangyun Chen shared in the Dev Vision video that since the launch of Season 1, the team has been focused on ensuring the game remains fun and engaging. Social media feedback has added pressure to keep the excitement alive, which NetEase acknowledges and is addressing through these changes. "With our goal of keeping the audience’s excitement alive just like our opening months, the real adventure with Marvel Rivals is just beginning," Chen stated. He emphasized the team's aim to fulfill players' fantasies about Marvel Super Heroes by introducing new modes and a diverse roster of characters. More details on how these changes will impact players will be shared before Season 3's launch.

NetEase recently unveiled details about Marvel Rivals Season 2, which will transition from the vampire takeover theme to a new storyline centered around the Hellfire Gala. This shift promises new outfits, maps, and characters, with more information to be released in the coming weeks.

Since its launch in December, Marvel Rivals has been a massive success, attracting 10 million players within three days. The game, a free-to-play superhero team-based PvP shooter, is available on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S. On Steam alone, it saw 480,990 concurrent players at launch, and Season 1 in January peaked at 644,269 concurrent players, making it the 15th most-played game on Valve's platform. Despite a subsequent decline in concurrent players, Marvel Rivals remains highly popular and is poised for a resurgence with the launches of Season 2 and Season 3.
