Civilization VII (Civ VII) is making a splash in the virtual reality (VR) world with its upcoming release on the Meta Quest 3 and 3S headsets this Spring 2025. This marks the franchise's first foray into VR and mixed reality (MR) gaming. The announcement, made during the Civ World Summit Event on February 8th, 2025, generated significant excitement among fans.
Meta Quest 3 Exclusivity and Developer Commentary
2K Games and Firaxis Games confirmed the Meta Quest 3 and 3S exclusivity for Civ VII VR. Dennis Shirk, Executive Franchise Producer, expressed enthusiasm for launching "a new era of strategy excellence," while Meta's Chris Pruett highlighted the game as a testament to the growing momentum in mixed reality gaming. Noteworthy is the absence of a PSVR2 release, despite the game's availability on PlayStation consoles.
Immersive Gameplay and Multiplayer Options
Civ VII VR offers a unique, board-game-like experience. Players navigate a "Command Table," allowing for detailed observation of units and buildings. The game seamlessly transitions between immersive VR and MR modes, adapting to the player's environment. A personalized vista, based on the chosen leader, awaits players in VR, while the Command Table integrates into the player's physical space in MR.
Single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer modes are supported, with up to four players able to engage simultaneously using Meta Quest headsets. Players can team up against AI opponents or compete directly against each other. Online multiplayer requires both a 2K and Meta account.
Addressing Player Feedback and Future Updates
Firaxis Games actively addressed player feedback from Civ VII's early access period (February 6th, 2025, for Deluxe and Founder's Editions). Acknowledging criticisms regarding the user interface (UI), the team pledged improvements to enhance intuitiveness, map readability, and overall polish. Further updates will include community-requested features like team-based multiplayer and expanded map variety. A quality-of-life update is scheduled for March, focusing on UI adjustments, AI balancing, diplomacy refinements, and bug fixes.
