A Poll Reveals the Path

Notch recently conducted a poll on X (formerly Twitter) presenting two game development options: a roguelike/dungeon crawler hybrid and a spiritual successor to Minecraft. The latter overwhelmingly won, garnering 81.5% of nearly 300,000 votes. This resounding preference seems to have solidified Notch's decision.

In a subsequent post, Notch confirmed his seriousness, stating he had essentially announced Minecraft 2. He acknowledged the immense popularity of the original and expressed a desire to reignite his passion for game development. He emphasized that while he's open to developing either game, the overwhelming fan response makes a Minecraft-inspired project highly likely.

Navigating Legal and Creative Challenges

It's important to note that Notch sold Minecraft's IP to Microsoft in 2014. Therefore, any new project would need to avoid direct infringement. Notch reassured fans that he respects Mojang Studios and Microsoft's work and intends to create something distinct, avoiding any "sneaky" similarities.

Notch also expressed concerns about the inherent challenges of creating a spiritual successor, acknowledging that such projects often deviate from expectations. Despite these concerns, the strong fan demand and potential financial success seem to outweigh his reservations.
