Nintendo Reveals Switch 2 Game Cards to Feature Download Keys

Nintendo has confirmed an innovative approach with the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, where some game cards will not contain the actual game data but instead will feature a download key. This was outlined in a recent customer support post following the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, indicating that when the console launches in June, consumers can continue to buy physical Switch games, but with a twist.

The company introduced the concept of game-key cards: physical cards that only hold a key for downloading the game. This means you'll need an internet connection to download the game after inserting the card into your Switch 2. To ensure clarity, these game-key card cases will feature a clear label on the front lower portion of the box, making it easy for buyers to identify what they are purchasing.
