Sequel Trilogy star Oscar Isaac's confirmed appearance at Star Wars Celebration 2025 in Tokyo (April 18-20) has ignited fervent speculation about a potential return of his character, Poe Dameron. The announcement, made via the official Star Wars Celebration Instagram, follows Daisy Ridley's 2023 Celebration appearance and subsequent confirmation for a new Star Wars film. This has led fans to anticipate a similar announcement from Isaac.
Isaac's relationship with the Star Wars franchise has been complex. Following the conclusion of the Sequel Trilogy in 2019 with The Rise of Skywalker, his stance on returning has evolved. While initially expressing reluctance (suggesting a return only for financial necessity), he later expressed openness to future projects, telling Variety he had "no real feeling one way or another."
His past criticisms of Disney, particularly regarding the rejection of a romantic storyline between Poe and Finn (portrayed by John Boyega), have added intrigue. Boyega also voiced past frustrations with Disney and the franchise, though he too has since indicated openness to future roles.
The possibility of a reunion of the Sequel Trilogy's main trio – Rey, Finn, and Poe – in the upcoming Rey film is now a significant fan theory. This film, set approximately 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker, centers on Rey's efforts to rebuild the Jedi Order. Ridley has already expressed her hope for Boyega's involvement, making Poe's return a logical next step to complete the core group.
However, definitive answers regarding Isaac's involvement may not come until Star Wars Celebration 2025. The uncertainty is further amplified by Disney's repeated delays of several announced Star Wars projects. The Rey film, directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, currently has a tentative release date of December 17, 2027, at the earliest.
