By SophiaJul 16,2025

Paradox Interactive has officially unveiled Europa Universalis 5, the next installment in its legendary grand strategy series, following a cryptic teaser shared just days ago.

The publisher—known for acclaimed titles such as Cities: Skylines, Crusader Kings, and Stellaris—has launched a cinematic trailer today that sets the tone for this expansive new chapter. The game is being developed by Paradox Tinto, the Barcelona-based studio that has contributed significantly to Europa Universalis 4 over the past several years. While no official release date has been announced, the Europa Universalis 5 Steam page is now live.

“Test your strategic prowess across half a millennium of history in Europa Universalis 5, the newest evolution of the iconic grand strategy franchise,” reads an official description from Paradox. “Navigate the complexities of warfare, trade, diplomacy, and governance in what promises to be the largest and most intricate entry in the series yet. Shape the fate of hundreds of nations within a dynamic, living world filled with unprecedented depth and realism.”

This title has been in development for over five years at Paradox Tinto, with a clear focus on serving the dedicated Paradox community. The team highlights that it has incorporated insights from more than a year of public feedback, ensuring that player voices have helped shape what they describe as “the most ambitious Europa Universalis experience ever created.”

Set against the backdrop of the Hundred Years’ War starting in 1337, Europa Universalis 5 invites players to lead their chosen nation through pivotal historical events. With a host of new features revealed today, the game introduces a vastly expanded map built using accurate cartographic projections and featuring hundreds of distinct societies.

For the first time, the game will implement a population-driven system, alongside enhanced production and trade mechanics. Players can establish farms, plantations, and factories or engage in regional commerce, giving them deeper control over economic expansion.

All of these innovations are designed to offer unparalleled freedom in how you build and manage your nation—true to the spirit of the series but elevated for a new generation of strategy gamers. Last week, Paradox teased the project as mysterious and “ambitious,” though many fans had already speculated its identity well in advance.
