Path of Exile 2 Expeditions: A Comprehensive Guide

Path of Exile 2 introduces four major endgame events: Delirium, Breaches, Rituals, and Expeditions. This guide focuses on Expeditions, a returning mechanic from a previous league, detailing how to find, engage with, and maximize rewards from this exciting endgame system.

Expedition Mechanics & Detonation

Expedition map nodes on the Atlas are marked with a distinctive light blue spiral icon. Use an Expedition Precursor Tablet in a completed Lost Tower slot to guarantee an Expedition encounter.

Once in an Expedition map, locate the central area with Markers and an NPC tent. The NPCs provide basic information, but mastering the mechanics requires further understanding.

The core gameplay revolves around strategically placing Explosives near Markers to spawn enemies and chests:

• Runic Monsters: Detonating Explosives near Red Markers spawns these powerful enemies. Larger Markers yield larger monster packs. These packs are further enhanced by Unearthed Remnants.
• Unearthed Remnants: These ground relics offer beneficial or detrimental modifiers. For example, increased monster elemental damage might be offset by higher item rarity from chests.
• Excavated Chests: Located near Black Markers with the spiral symbol, these chests contain valuable rewards such as Artifacts, Logbooks, currency, Waystones, and high-end gear.

Use the Explosives UI (bottom-right) to visualize the area of effect (AoE). Avoid overlapping AoE circles for optimal resource management. After placing Explosives, activate them via the Detonator. Runic Monsters will be empowered by activated Remnants.

Death resets the map, but you can strategically retreat and return later. The event doesn't end if you leave the area.

Expedition Pinnacle Map

Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests have a chance to drop Expedition Logbooks. Use these Logbooks with Dannig in your hideout to access the Expedition Pinnacle Map. This map offers a significantly larger-scale Expedition event with more Explosives.

The Pinnacle Map features a challenging boss, Olroth (indicated by a skull on the minimap). Defeating Olroth is crucial for obtaining Expedition Passive Skill Tree points (2x points per victory).

Expedition Passive Skill Tree

Located within the Atlas Passive Skill Tree, the Expedition Passive Skill Tree enhances the event. Points are used to increase rewards, monster spawns, and Remnant effects.

The tree features eight Notable nodes and eight nodes increasing Logbook difficulty (and Olroth's challenge). Each new Notable node requires defeating Olroth at an increased difficulty.

Prioritize "Disturbed Rest," "Detailed Records," and "Timed Detonations" for significant reward boosts. Then consider "Weight of History," "Unearthed Anomalies," and "Legendary Battles" for further, but more challenging, gains. Avoid "Extreme Archaeology" due to the drastic reduction in Explosives.

Expedition Rewards

Artifacts are the primary currency. Four types exist, each used with a specific vendor to acquire gear:

Expedition Logbooks, obtained from Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests, unlock the Pinnacle Map and the chance to fight Olroth, yielding high-tier rewards and additional Passive Skill Tree points.
