High Demand for Pokémon TCG's Prismatic Evolutions Leads to Production Increase
The Pokémon Company is responding to unexpectedly high demand for its latest Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) expansion, Scarlet & Violet—Prismatic Evolutions, by increasing production. Initial release saw significant shortages, impacting availability for fans.
Addressing the Shortage:
A Pokémon Company spokesperson acknowledged the difficulties some fans faced acquiring the set, citing high demand as the primary cause. They confirmed the company is working at maximum capacity to produce more cards to meet this demand. While fans may experience delays, the company is committed to resolving the issue.
Impact on Retailers:
The unexpected surge in demand disproportionately affected smaller, independent US retailers. Reports from websites like PokeBeach indicated that distributors limited supplies to local stores, allocating a smaller percentage (10-15%) compared to larger chains like GameStop and Target. This resulted in significant shortages at many local game stores.
Deguire, owner of Player 1 Services in Maryland, noted that stores not typically carrying Pokémon TCG products were also ordering the set, contributing to the supply constraints. This limited distribution strategy, while aiming for broader reach, inadvertently exacerbated the shortage for smaller businesses.
The shortage has also led to price inflation on the secondary market, with some products like the Elite Trainer Box selling significantly above retail price. However, this situation is expected to improve once the Pokémon Company increases supply.
Expansion Details and Release Schedule:
Initially announced on November 1, 2024, Scarlet & Violet—Prismatic Evolutions launched January 17, 2025, featuring Tera Pokémon ex, new illustration rares, and reprints of popular cards with updated art. Additional products, including a Surprise Box, Mini Tin, Booster Bundle, and Pouch Special Collection, are scheduled for release throughout 2025. A digital version of the set launched on Pokémon TCG Live on January 16, 2025.
The Pokémon Company's commitment to increasing production should alleviate the shortages in the coming months, ensuring more fans can access this highly sought-after expansion.
