Professor Layton is back! A new adventure is on the horizon, and Nintendo played a key role in making it happen. Learn how LEVEL-5's CEO revealed the story behind this long-awaited sequel.
Professor Layton's Puzzle-Solving Continues
Nintendo's Influence on the Sequel
After a nearly decade-long absence, Professor Layton returns. LEVEL-5, the series' creator, shared insights at Tokyo Game Show (TGS) 2024, explaining the path to Professor Layton and the New World of Steam.
In a conversation with Yuji Horii (Dragon Quest creator), LEVEL-5 CEO Akihiro Hino revealed that while Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy felt like a satisfying conclusion, Nintendo’s encouragement was crucial in reviving the series. Hino stated that significant industry figures, specifically referencing "Company ‘N’" (widely understood to be Nintendo), strongly advocated for a new game.
According to AUTOMATON, Hino said, "The series concluded briefly, almost 10 years ago. We received a strong push from Company ‘N’ to create a new title."
Nintendo's involvement is unsurprising, given their close ties to the franchise. The original games thrived on the Nintendo DS and 3DS, and Nintendo published many titles. The series is highly regarded as a DS highlight.
Hino explained, "Their feedback led me to believe a new game, leveraging the capabilities of the latest consoles, would allow fans to experience the series at its best."
Professor Layton and the New World of Steam: A Glimpse into the Adventure
Set a year after Professor Layton and the Unwound Future, Professor Layton and the New World of Steam reunites Professor Layton and Luke Triton in Steam Bison, a vibrant American city powered by steam technology. They'll face a new mystery involving Gunman King Joe, a gunslinger "lost to progress," as revealed in the latest trailer.
The game retains the series' signature challenging puzzles, this time enhanced through a collaboration with QuizKnock, a team renowned for innovative brain teasers. This partnership is especially exciting for fans following the mixed reception of Layton's Mystery Journey, which featured Layton's daughter.
