Indie Dev Cellar Door Games Releases Rogue Legacy Source Code for Educational Purposes

Rogue Legacy Source Code Release

Cellar Door Games, the developer behind the popular 2013 roguelike, Rogue Legacy, has made a significant move towards open knowledge sharing by releasing the game's source code to the public. The code is available for free download via GitHub, under a non-commercial license, allowing for personal use and study. This generous act has been lauded by the gaming community for its potential to foster learning and game preservation.

The initiative, announced on X (formerly Twitter), emphasizes the developer's commitment to education. The GitHub repository, managed by Ethan Lee (a developer also involved in open-sourcing other indie titles), provides complete access to the game's scripting.

This release offers a valuable resource for aspiring game developers, providing a real-world example to learn from. Furthermore, it safeguards the game's accessibility, ensuring its continued availability even if it's removed from digital storefronts – a crucial aspect of digital game preservation. The announcement even sparked interest from the Rochester Museum of Play's Director of Digital Preservation, Andrew Borman, who expressed interest in collaborating with Cellar Door Games.

It's important to note that while the source code is freely available, the game's assets (art, music, and icons) are not included, remaining under proprietary license. Cellar Door Games encourages those wanting to use assets outside the license terms, or create derivative works incorporating elements not included in the repository, to contact them directly. The developer's GitHub page clearly states the intention is to inspire, educate, and enable the creation of new tools and modifications for Rogue Legacy.
