Rumor: Beloved Nintendo 64 Exclusive Coming to Modern Consoles

Updated ESRB Ratings Hint at Imminent Doom 64 Release for PS5 and Xbox Series X

Recent updates to the ESRB ratings suggest a potential imminent release of Doom 64 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles. While Bethesda and id Software remain officially silent, the updated ESRB listing strongly indicates a forthcoming launch.

The 1997 Nintendo 64 classic, Doom 64, received a 2020 remaster for PS4 and Xbox One, featuring graphical enhancements and an additional chapter. This enhanced version also launched on Steam. The new ESRB rating, however, points to a next-gen iteration for the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

ESRB ratings typically precede game releases by a few months, suggesting a relatively short wait for players eager to experience the N64 title on modern hardware. The absence of a PC rating in this update is noteworthy, though the 2020 port's Steam release and the existence of Doom 64 mods for classic Doom titles on PC might suggest a future PC release or that a PC port is not currently planned.

Bethesda's history of surprise releases for older Doom titles adds further intrigue. The company's past practice of stealth-launching ports without prior announcement leaves open the possibility of a similar strategy for Doom 64.

Looking beyond Doom 64, rumors point towards a 2025 release for Doom: The Dark Ages, with a potential announcement as early as January. The release of updated versions of classic Doom titles could serve as effective pre-release marketing for the upcoming installment in the long-running franchise.
