The Last of Us Season 2's Abby Didn't Bulk Up Because HBO Didn't Need to Emulate Certain Video Game Mechanics, Neil Druckmann Says

The HBO adaptation of *The Last of Us Part II* will portray Abby differently than her video game counterpart. Showrunner Neil Druckmann explains that actress Kaitlyn Dever didn't need the same physical build as the game's Abby because the show prioritizes drama over mirroring specific game mechanics. Druckmann notes that the game required distinct gameplay for Ellie and Abby—Ellie nimble, Abby a brute—but the show’s focus shifts the emphasis. While action remains, the narrative centers on character drama.

Fellow showrunner Craig Mazin adds that this allows for exploring a more physically vulnerable Abby whose inner strength is even more compelling. The show will explore the origins and manifestations of her formidable nature.

The creators acknowledge the intense negative reaction to Abby in the game, which included harassment of Naughty Dog employees, including Druckmann and Laura Bailey. This prompted increased security for actress Kaitlyn Dever during filming. Actress Isabel Merced (Dina) highlights the absurdity of the hatred directed at a fictional character.
