Konami's latest Silent Hill Transmission unveiled Silent Hill f, a chilling new entry in the beloved horror franchise, transporting players to 1960s Japan.
First announced in 2022 as a game set in a "beautiful, therefore terrifying" world, Silent Hill f is penned by Ryukishi07, the acclaimed writer behind the Higurashi and Umineko visual novel series. The recent Transmission offered a deeper look into the game's unsettling atmosphere.
Silent Hill f: Finding Beauty in Terror
Konami showcased a new trailer and revealed the game's core concept: "finding the beauty in terror" and presenting players with a pivotal, terrifying choice within the backdrop of 1960s Japan. While the nature of this choice remains shrouded in mystery, the story unfolds around Shimizu Hinkao, an ordinary teenager whose life is shattered when her town is enveloped in fog and undergoes a horrific transformation. Hinkao must navigate this unrecognizable landscape, solving puzzles, battling strange enemies, and ultimately confronting a fateful decision. This original story offers a compelling entry point for newcomers while including Easter eggs to delight longtime fans. The game is set in the fictional Japanese town of Ebisugaoka, inspired by the real-world location of Kanayama, Gero, in Gifu Prefecture.
A New Vision of Horror
Creature and character designer kera shared their creative process, highlighting the challenge of designing monsters while staying true to the *Silent Hill* legacy: "I love the Silent Hill series…When it came to Silent Hill f, and bringing the setting to Japan, we had to come up with something that felt just a little different…The monster designs were the hardest. I had to consider everything that's come in Silent Hill before, and figure out how to take this game in a different direction, but still be Silent Hill."A Symphony of Fear
The soundtrack will be a crucial element. Longtime Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka and Kensuke Inage (known for his work on the Dynasty Warriors series) will craft the music for the Fog World and Otherworld, respectively. Inage describes his approach: "I have composed music for an unsettling yet beautiful world…I wove in various techniques that will connect the player to the protagonist's agony, internal conflict, fear, and other emotions."
Silent Hill f is slated for release on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, though a release date remains unannounced.
