Sonic Enthusiast Creates Nostalgic Fan Game with Mania Echoes

Sonic Galactic: A Sonic Mania-esque Fan Game

Sonic Galactic, developed by Starteam, is a Sonic the Hedgehog fan game channeling the spirit of Sonic Mania. The vibrant fan community consistently produces sequels and spin-offs, and Sonic Mania, a 25th-anniversary celebration, remains a fan favorite. While a true sequel never materialized due to Sonic Team's shift away from pixel art and the developers' pursuit of other projects, Sonic Galactic fills the void.

Built over four years, initially showcased at the 2020 Sonic Amateur Games Expo, Sonic Galactic imagines a 32-bit Sonic title, evoking the feel of a potential Sega Saturn release. It faithfully recreates the retro 2D platforming experience of classic Genesis games, adding unique twists.

What Makes Sonic Galactic Unique?

The second demo, released in early 2025, features the iconic trio – Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles – in new zones. Joining them are Fang the Sniper (from Sonic Triple Trouble) and a new character, Tunnel the Mole (from Illusion Island), each with unique gameplay paths.

The special stages strongly resemble those in Sonic Mania, demanding ring collection within time limits in 3D environments. A complete playthrough of Sonic's stages takes roughly an hour, while the other characters each have approximately one stage, resulting in a total playtime of a couple of hours. The game's pixel art style and classic Sonic gameplay will undoubtedly resonate with fans of Sonic Mania and retro platformers.
