Star Wars Movie From Deadpool & Wolverine Director Could Star Ryan Gosling

By JoshuaFeb 25,2025

Shawn Levy, director of Deadpool and Wolverine, is reportedly in talks to helm a new Star Wars film, with Ryan Gosling potentially starring. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that negotiations are underway to secure Gosling for the lead role. Levy has been developing this project since 2022, with a script finalized last year. He's collaborating again with Jonathan Tropper, screenwriter for This Is Where I Leave You and The Adam Project.

Plot details remain tightly under wraps. It's confirmed the film will be a standalone movie, unrelated to the Skywalker Saga, and not part of a planned trilogy. The era and Gosling's character are yet to be revealed.

The potential casting of Gosling has reportedly expedited the project. Levy was previously attached to direct a boy band movie with Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, but the Star Wars film is now likely to be his next project, with production potentially starting this fall.

This news comes amidst a period of transition for the Star Wars franchise. Following the cancellation of The Acolyte, Skeleton Crew recently concluded its run on Disney+. On the film front, Dave Filoni's Mandalorian and Grogu movie completed production in December, targeting a May 22, 2026 release. A new trilogy focusing on Daisy Ridley's Rey is also in the works.

A release date for Levy's Star Wars film remains unannounced, pending the confirmation of Gosling's involvement and the commencement of production. For a comprehensive look at the future of the Star Wars universe, see our 2025 preview.
