Blizzard is currently fielding numerous proposals from prominent Korean studios eager to bring fresh ideas to the beloved *StarCraft* universe. As highlighted by the KoreaXboxnews Twitter account, Asia Today reported that four major companies—NCSoft, Nexon, Netmarble, and Krafton—are vying for the opportunity to develop new titles under the *StarCraft* intellectual property (IP) license. These studios have reportedly made presentations at Blizzard’s headquarters in Irvine, California, showcasing their unique concepts.
NCSoft, known for franchises like *Lineage* and *Guild Wars*, is rumored to be pitching an *MMORPG*-style *StarCraft* RPG. Meanwhile, Nexon, creators of *The First Descendant*, aims to present an innovative take on the *StarCraft* IP. Netmarble, famous for *Solo Leveling: Arise* and *Game of Thrones: Kingsroad*, is focused on developing a mobile-centric *StarCraft* game. Lastly, Krafton, the studio behind *PUBG* and the *Sims*-inspired *iZOI*, seeks to craft a title leveraging its distinctive development expertise.
While pitches happen frequently between studios, *StarCraft* fans are undoubtedly intrigued by Blizzard’s renewed interest in expanding its iconic sci-fi franchise. Activision Blizzard did not respond to inquiries from IGN regarding these developments. It’s worth noting that Blizzard has previously expressed ambitions to revitalize *StarCraft* through various projects. In fact, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier disclosed during a Podcast Unlocked interview that Blizzard is actively working on a *StarCraft* shooter, led by former Far Cry executive producer Dan Hay.
This marks Blizzard’s third attempt at creating a *StarCraft* shooter. The first, *StarCraft Ghost*, was announced in 2002 but ultimately canceled in 2006 due to repeated delays. A subsequent effort, codenamed Ares, was scrapped in 2019 to prioritize *Diablo 4* and *Overwatch 2*. Recently, Blizzard has been recruiting talent for what is believed to be a forthcoming open-world shooter, likely tied to the *StarCraft* universe.
Despite the setbacks, *StarCraft* continues to gain momentum. Blizzard recently re-released *StarCraft: Remastered* and *StarCraft 2: Campaign Collection* on Game Pass and announced a crossover event with the popular card game *Hearthstone*. These moves signal a promising future for the franchise as it explores new possibilities within its storied lore.
