Legendary Entertainment's upcoming Street Fighter film adaptation now has a director at the helm, not a challenger, so to speak.
Kitao Sakurai, a writer, director, and executive producer for the notoriously surreal series The Eric Andre Show, has been tapped to direct the new movie according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Capcom is reportedly "deeply involved" in the adaptation, which already has a release date set for March 20, 2026.
This marks the latest effort to bring Street Fighter to the big screen, though many still fondly remember the 1994 version featuring Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile, Ming-Na Wen as Chun-Li, and the late Raul Julia as M. Bison. That film is often considered a cult classic, despite receiving mixed reviews upon its initial release.
Casting details have not yet been revealed, but fans can likely expect appearances from many of the franchise's most popular characters.
Previously, the directing duo Danny and Michael Philippou, known for Talk to Me, were attached to the project before exiting last summer. Hiring Sakurai, an Eric Andre Show veteran, suggests Legendary may be taking the film in a more unconventional, absurdist direction. For fans who appreciate Street Fighter's over-the-top, cartoonish spirit, this potential shift is an exciting development.
While waiting for the film, you can dive into the latest game, Street Fighter 6, which recently welcomed Mai Shiranui as a new fighter. Read our comprehensive Street Fighter 6 review for more details.
