Take-Two Boss Says It's 'Shown a Willingness to Support Legacy Titles' Amid Questions About the Future of GTA Online Post-GTA 6

By AndrewMay 25,2025

The looming release of Grand Theft Auto 6 in fall 2025 has sparked curiosity and concern among the dedicated player base of GTA Online. Since its announcement, fans have been pondering the future of the lucrative live service that has remained a staple in the gaming community for over a decade. GTA Online's ongoing success and profitability have led Rockstar to focus on its live service rather than story-based DLC for GTA 5, a move that has not sat well with all fans. However, the bigger question remains: What will happen to GTA Online once GTA 6 launches?

With the anticipated arrival of GTA 6, it's expected that a new iteration of GTA Online will be introduced. Whether it's dubbed GTA Online 2 or retains the original name, the transition has left current players worried about their investments in time, effort, and money. The fear is that these could be rendered obsolete if there's a complete shift to a new platform later in 2025.

This uncertainty raises the question: Is it still worth investing in GTA Online in early 2025, with the potential release of a new GTA Online just months away? In a recent interview with IGN ahead of Take-Two's third-quarter financial report, Strauss Zelnick, the head of Take-Two, addressed this concern. His response provides some insight into the company's approach to managing multiple versions of their online services.

Will You Continue to Play GTA Online When GTA 6 Comes Out? ----------------------------------------------------------

While Zelnick refrained from discussing specifics about a new GTA Online, he drew parallels with Take-Two's strategy for NBA 2K Online. Launched in 2012, followed by NBA 2K Online 2 in 2017, both games continue to be supported, allowing players to engage with either version without fear of being left behind.

"I'm going to speak theoretically only because I'm not going to talk about a particular project when an announcement hasn't been made," Zelnick stated. "But generally speaking, we support our properties when the consumers are involved with those titles. As an example, we launched NBA 2K Online in China, I think originally in 2012 if I'm not mistaken. And then we launched NBA 2K Online 2 in China in 2017. If I'm not mistaken. We did not sunset Online 1. They both are still in the market and they serve consumers and they're alive and we have this massive audience."

Zelnick's comments suggest a commitment to supporting legacy titles as long as there is an active community engaged with them. This implies that if there is a GTA Online 2, it might not mean the end for the original GTA Online. As long as players continue to engage with the current version, Rockstar may continue to support it.

Given that we've only seen Trailer 1 and have a release window for GTA 6, there's still much to learn. With GTA 6 slated for a fall 2025 release, potentially following Borderlands 4's September launch, more details are expected soon. In the meantime, consider Zelnick's thoughts on the decision to possibly skip a PC launch for GTA 6.
