Unleash Orpheus: Discover Path Choices in Baldur's Gate 3

By AmeliaFeb 10,2025

In Baldur's Gate 3, one of the most pivotal decisions awaits players near the story's climax: freeing the imprisoned Githyanki Prince Orpheus or allowing the Emperor to handle the situation. This choice, made after acquiring the Orphic Hammer, significantly impacts the party's fate.

Updated February 29, 2024: Before this decision, players must defeat Ketheric Throm, Lord Enver Gortash, and Orin. This requires extensive exploration of Baldur's Gate's upper and lower districts. The choice carries immense weight; companions might sacrifice themselves. High skill checks (potentially 30) are needed to influence companion decisions.

Spoiler Warning: The following discusses Baldur's Gate 3's ending.

Should You Free Orpheus?

This decision depends on player preferences. The Emperor warns that Orpheus' imprisonment prevents party members from becoming Illithids. Freeing Orpheus risks this transformation for one or more party members.

After the Netherbrain battle (which the Emperor teleports the party to after a failed attempt), the choice is presented: free Orpheus or let the Emperor absorb his power.

Siding with the Emperor:

This results in Orpheus' demise as the Emperor absorbs his knowledge. Lae'zel and Karlach may disapprove, impacting their personal quests. While this aids in defeating the Netherbrain, it's unpopular with fans of these characters.

Freeing Orpheus:

This causes the Emperor to side with the Netherbrain. Again, party members risk Illithid transformation. However, Orpheus joins the fight alongside the Githyanki. If asked, he'll willingly become a Mind Flayer to save his people.

In short: Choose the Emperor to avoid Illithid transformation; choose Orpheus to risk it. The Emperor's choice might alienate Lae'zel and send Karlach back to Avernus.

The Moral High Ground?

This is subjective, but boils down to loyalty. Orpheus is the rightful Githyanki ruler, opposing Vlaakith's tyranny. A Githyanki player would naturally side with him. However, following Voss and Lae'zel's directives might seem overly demanding. The Gith prioritize themselves, even if their actions affect the wider world.

The Emperor is generally benevolent, aiming to defeat the Netherbrain and aid the party. He accepts necessary sacrifices. Following his plan might lead to Illithid transformation, but a morally upright one. Remember, BG3 offers multiple endings; strategic choices can yield favorable outcomes for everyone.
