Lost Soul Aside ditches PSN account linking for PC release
Lost Soul Aside, a Sony-published action RPG slated for a 2025 PC release, has reportedly dropped its controversial PlayStation Network (PSN) account linking requirement. This significant change expands the game's market reach, allowing Sony to sell the title in over 100 countries previously unsupported by PSN.
This decision marks a potential shift in Sony's strategy for PlayStation PC ports. Initially, mandatory PSN linking for PC games drew considerable criticism, limiting sales and player access. However, Lost Soul Aside's exemption suggests a more flexible approach moving forward.
Developed by UltiZeroGames, Lost Soul Aside is a highly anticipated title born from PlayStation's China Hero Project. The Devil May Cry-inspired hack-and-slash game has been in development for nearly nine years. While Sony funds and publishes the game across PS5 and PC platforms, the initial implementation of PSN linking last year proved unpopular.
The reversal is evident in the game's Steam page history. While initially requiring PSN linking, this requirement was swiftly removed after the December 2024 gameplay trailer release. This makes Lost Soul Aside only the second Sony-published PC game to abandon the PSN linking mandate, following a similar reversal for Helldivers 2.
The reasoning behind Sony's decision remains unclear, but maximizing player reach is a likely factor. Previous PlayStation PC releases, hampered by PSN linking, experienced lower player counts compared to their console counterparts. God of War Ragnarok, for example, saw significantly fewer Steam players than its predecessor. Lost Soul Aside's move could indicate a strategic recalibration to improve PC game performance.
