Virtua Fighter Returns: A Glimpse into the Future
Sega has unveiled new in-engine footage of the next Virtua Fighter installment, marking the franchise's highly anticipated return after nearly two decades of relative dormancy. The development reins are held by Sega's own Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, known for its work on the Yakuza series and the Virtua Fighter 5 remaster.
The recently released footage, showcased at NVIDIA's CES 2025 keynote, isn't actual gameplay, but rather a meticulously choreographed cinematic showcasing the game's visual style. While impeccably staged, the video offers a compelling preview of the game's potential. The visuals represent a significant departure from the franchise's polygonal roots, aiming for a realistic aesthetic that blends elements of Tekken 8 and Street Fighter 6. The iconic character Akira is featured, sporting new outfits that deviate from his traditional look.
The last major Virtua Fighter release was Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown, a remaster released in 2021 for PlayStation 4 and Japanese arcades, recently confirmed for a Steam launch in January 2025. This upcoming title, however, promises to be a completely new entry, a fresh start for the franchise. While details remain scarce, Sega's commitment to revitalizing Virtua Fighter is evident, as expressed by Sega President and COO Shuji Utsumi in the VF Direct 2024 livestream: "Virtua Fighter is finally back!" The game's development, alongside Sega's announced Project Century, is further testament to this renewed focus. The footage, though cinematic, provides a tantalizing glimpse into the evolution of the Virtua Fighter franchise and its potential to reignite the fighting game landscape.
