Wizards of the Coast DMCA Targets Fan's Baldur's Gate 3 Mod, Larian CEO Reacts

By RileyMay 12,2025

Wizards of the Coast has issued a DMCA takedown notice for a fan mod called "Baldur's Village," which integrated characters from Baldur's Gate 3 into Stardew Valley. The mod, which was released earlier this month, had initially received public praise from Larian Studios CEO Sven Vincke, who lauded the effort and creativity behind it.

However, the mod was quickly taken down following the DMCA notice from Wizards of the Coast, the holder of the Dungeons & Dragons and Baldur's Gate IPs. A spokesperson from Nexus Mods expressed hope that this might be an oversight by Wizards of the Coast, who often use external agencies to identify infringing content, and suggested that the decision could potentially be reversed.

Sven Vincke responded to the situation on Twitter, reiterating his support for the mod while acknowledging the complexities of IP protection. He stated, "Protecting your IP can be tricky but I do hope this gets settled. There are good ways of dealing with this." Vincke emphasized the value of fan mods, noting that they serve as a testament to the impact of the original work and should not be treated as commercial infringements.

This incident might be part of a broader strategy by Wizards of the Coast to protect the Baldur's Gate IP, especially in light of upcoming announcements about the franchise's future, as hinted at during the recent Game Developers Conference. Whether this takedown was a deliberate move or a mistake remains to be seen, and Wizards of the Coast has been contacted for further comment on the matter.
