Saw XI 'Stalled at a Managerial Level' Due to Lionsgate and Producer Tensions

By EthanMar 21,2025

It’s official: the Saw franchise is on hold, at least for now. The upcoming Saw XI, originally slated for a fall release, has been indefinitely stalled. This isn't a creative roadblock, according to screenwriter Patrick Melton, who told The Hollywood Reporter that the delay stems from "higher-level" issues between producers and Lionsgate. Melton and his writing partner, Marcus Dunstan, submitted a script draft nearly a year ago (spring 2024), but internal disagreements have prevented the project from moving forward.

Frequent franchise director Kevin Gruetert was attached in December 2023, leading to a planned September 2024 release. The subsequent delay to September 2025, following the success of Saw X (over $120 million globally), disappointed fans. The hope was that the delay would benefit the story, especially considering the momentum of the previous installment.

While plot details remain under wraps, Melton hinted that Saw XI would explore timely themes, similar to Saw VI, which he and Dunstan wrote and Gruetert directed. That film targeted health insurance executives. Melton expressed hope that Saw XI will eventually see the light of day, emphasizing its relevant themes: "It taps into the same themes of Saw VI, where you’re a citizen, you feel angry and frustrated with something, you feel like you can’t do anything, and John Kramer’s going to do it." The potential for a socially relevant Saw film remains intriguing, but its future is currently uncertain.
