In the early stages of *Avowed*'s main quest, the Envoy faces a tragic assassination. After unraveling the mystery of their own murder, you'll uncover the identity of your killer: Ygwulf. A member of the Paradisan Rebels, who fiercely oppose Aedyr's presence in the region, Ygwulf becomes your prime target. Upon tracking him down to an underground hideout, you'll confront him after navigating through enemies and completing platforming challenges. Be sure to come equipped with plenty of Health Potions and your best gear.
As you explore the dungeon, you may stumble upon documents that shed light on Ygwulf's true intentions and his remorse. Initially driven by what he believed were divine visions compelling him to kill the Envoy, Ygwulf later recognizes his mistake and expresses genuine regret. Even without finding these documents, he will convey his remorse when you confront him at the end of the quest. He is willing to face justice for his actions, leaving you with a critical decision: mercy or vengeance.
What Happens If You Spare Ygwulf or He Turns Himself In?
Opting for Ygwulf to turn himself in to the Inquisitor of the Steel Garrote is the least favorable choice. By doing so, he faces the merciless Inquisitor Lödwyn, leading to a painful death. This path not only results in a brutal end for Ygwulf but also offers less rewarding outcomes compared to sparing him or defeating him in combat.
Choosing to spare Ygwulf grants you 625 Copper Skeyt and some Adra, acknowledging your mercy. While these resources are modest, they can be useful. However, despite sparing him, Ygwulf's fate remains sealed, and he will meet his demise later in the story.
Why You Should Kill Ygwulf in Avowed
Given that Ygwulf's fate is inevitably death, the best course of action is to choose the Attack option during your confrontation. This leads to a boss fight, providing valuable experience for future encounters in *Avowed*. Moreover, defeating Ygwulf yields the most rewarding loot among the options available.
By defeating Ygwulf, you can loot his body for currency, Adra, and his unique armor set, Blackwing. Not only does this armor look impressive, but it also offers significant stealth benefits, including a +30% Damage boost when attacking from stealth and a 25% Movement Speed buff when crouching, enhancing your ability to sneak past enemies.
Does Ygwulf’s Fate Affect the Story in Avowed? SPOILER WARNING
Despite encountering Ygwulf early in the game, his fate subtly influences the ending of *Avowed*. After completing the final gameplay section, you'll see art and narration illustrating the impact of your decisions on the world of Eora within the Living Lands.
Regardless of your efforts to bring peace and unity to the Living Lands, Ygwulf's death will always occur, radicalizing the Paradisan Rebellion and ensuring they remain a violent resistance to your efforts post-credits.
