PC gaming is largely synonymous with keyboard and mouse controls, especially for genres like first-person shooters and strategy games that demand precision. However, some PC games are surprisingly better suited to controllers. Games emphasizing fast-paced action, reflex-based movement, or melee combat often benefit from a gamepad's intuitive control scheme. This is especially true for titles originating on consoles and later ported to PC.
While many PC releases offer keyboard and mouse support, certain genres lend themselves naturally to controllers. The recent influx of console ports to PC often prioritizes controller optimization. While many 2024 releases, such as Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Infinity Nikki, Marvel Rivals, Path of Exile 2, and Delta Force, excel with keyboard and mouse, some titles might offer a superior experience with a gamepad. Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver 1&2 Remastered, for instance, plays adequately with either, but a gamepad might offer a slight edge.
Several upcoming PC game releases show promise for enhanced controller play:
- Freedom Wars Remastered: A PS Vita port echoing the Monster Hunter formula, likely optimized for controller use.
- Tales of Graces f Remastered: The Tales series consistently performs better with gamepads, suggesting this remaster will follow suit.
- Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth: Given the similar combat system to its predecessor, a controller is likely preferred.
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2: A typical "controller-first" experience for a PS5 port. Keyboard and mouse may still be viable, however.
A noteworthy 2024 Soulslike title also warrants consideration (see below).
