Deltarune Update: Chapter 4 Nears Completion, but Release Remains Distant
Undertale creator Toby Fox recently shared a development update on Deltarune in his latest newsletter, revealing significant progress but also highlighting the challenges ahead before the release of Chapters 3 and 4.
While Chapter 4 is nearing completion, with all maps finished and battles playable, Fox notes that polishing remains. This includes minor cutscene improvements, battle balancing and visual enhancements, background additions, and refining ending sequences for several battles. Despite this, he considers Chapter 4 essentially playable, having received positive feedback from playtesters.
The complexity of a multi-platform, multilingual release is delaying the launch. Fox emphasizes the importance of a polished product, especially given this is their first major paid release since Undertale. Before launch, the team must complete several key tasks:
- Testing new features
- Finalizing PC and console versions
- Japanese localization
- Comprehensive bug testing
Chapter 3 development is finished (as per Fox's February newsletter), and early work on Chapter 5 has already begun, indicating a proactive approach to future development.
The newsletter offered a glimpse of upcoming content, including Ralsei and Rouxls dialogue, an Elnina character description, and a new item, GingerGuard. While the three-year wait since Chapter 2 has been frustrating for fans, the promise of Chapters 3 and 4 exceeding the combined length of Chapters 1 and 2 fuels anticipation.
Although a specific release date remains unannounced, Fox expresses confidence that future chapter releases will be more streamlined once Chapters 3 and 4 launch.
