Bethesda is reportedly set to unveil a highly anticipated remake of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion in the coming weeks, with a swift release to follow. According to NatetheHate, a source who previously accurately predicted the announcement date of the Nintendo Switch 2, the reveal is expected either this month or next. This information has been corroborated by VGC, adding credibility to the imminent announcement.
The release timeline, however, remains slightly ambiguous. NatetheHate suggests a launch before June, while VGC indicates a potential release as early as April. This discrepancy adds an element of excitement and anticipation for fans eagerly awaiting the game's return.
In January, Mp1st shed light on seemingly accidental disclosures about the Oblivion remake by a former employee at Virtuos, a video game support studio. Microsoft, when approached by IGN for comment, chose not to respond. Mp1st revealed that Virtuos is employing Unreal Engine 5 to completely reimagine Bethesda's beloved open-world RPG, hinting at a comprehensive remake rather than a simple remaster. Alleged gameplay changes include modifications to Stamina, Sneak, Blocking, Archery, Hit Reaction, and the heads-up display (HUD).
Specifically, the Blocking system has been revamped with influences from action games and Soulslikes, addressing the original's perceived monotony and frustration. Sneak icons are now highlighted, and damage calculations have been overhauled. The effect of depleting Stamina leading to a knockdown is reportedly more challenging to trigger. The HUD has been redesigned for better clarity, hit reactions have been added for improved responsiveness, and Archery mechanics have been modernized for both first and third-person perspectives.
Rumors of an Oblivion remaster surfaced in 2023, following the release of documents during the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) versus Microsoft trial regarding the acquisition of Activision Blizzard. These documents, dated from July 2020, listed several unannounced Bethesda titles planned for release in the coming years. Among them was an "Oblivion Remaster" slated for financial year 2022. However, it's clear that the project's scope may have expanded from a remaster to a full-fledged remake.
As for the platforms, with Microsoft now focusing on multiplatform releases and the impending launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion remake could potentially be available on more than just PC, Xbox, and PlayStation. If the Switch 2 launches around June, there's a chance that Oblivion could be part of its launch lineup, broadening its reach to an even wider audience.
