George R. R. Martin, the mastermind behind the intricate world of Westeros in *Game of Thrones*, has provided the strongest hint yet about the potential for an *Elden Ring* movie. This revelation comes despite his ongoing commitment to completing *The Winds of Winter*, the long-awaited sixth book in his *A Song of Ice and Fire* series.
Martin, who collaborated with FromSoftware to craft the lore and history of *Elden Ring*, one of 2022's top-selling games, spoke to IGN during IGN Fan Fest 2025. While sidestepping questions about a sequel to the game, he teased the possibility of a cinematic adaptation. "Well, I can't say too much about it, but there is some talk about making a movie out of *Elden Ring*," Martin stated.
This isn't the first time Martin has hinted at such a project. FromSoftware's president, Hidetaka Miyazaki, has also expressed openness to an *Elden Ring* adaptation, contingent on finding a "very strong partner." In an interview with The Guardian, Miyazaki acknowledged the interest but highlighted the necessity of a trusted partner due to FromSoftware's lack of experience in different media.
However, Martin's potential involvement in the *Elden Ring* movie faces a significant hurdle: his dedication to finishing *The Winds of Winter*. "We'll see if that [the *Elden Ring* movie] comes to pass and what the extent of my involvement was, I don't know," he told IGN. "I'm a few years behind with my latest book, so that also limits the amount of things that I can do."
The wait for *The Winds of Winter* has been agonizing for fans, with the last book in the series, *A Dance With Dragons*, released in 2011. Martin himself has acknowledged the delays, humorously noting in December, "Unfortunately, I am 13 years late. Every time I say that, I’m [like], 'How could I be 13 years late?' I don’t know, it happens a day at a time."
Despite the challenges, Martin remains committed to his work. "But that’s still a priority," he emphasized. "A lot of people are already writing obituaries for me. [They’re saying] ‘Oh, he’ll never be finished.’ Maybe they’re right. I don’t know. I’m alive right now! I seem pretty vital!”
Regarding his contribution to *Elden Ring*, Martin detailed his role in worldbuilding, explaining how he helped FromSoftware create the game's backstory. "When they came to me, FromSoftware, they wanted the world. They knew the action of *Elden Ring* that the players would get into would be in the ‘present.’ But something had created that present, had created that world. So where did that world come from?" Martin shared. He elaborated on his fascination with the game's lore, runes, and magic, and how he enjoyed collaborating with the team.
When asked if all his work was utilized in the game, Martin noted that much of the worldbuilding material often exceeds what is shown on screen. "Yeah, I think especially when you're world building, there's always more that you actually see on the screen," he said, drawing parallels with other epic fantasies like Tolkien's works.
