Capcom Producer Hints at Marvel vs. Capcom 2 OG Character Returns in Future Fighting Games
Capcom producer Shuhei Matsumoto has ignited excitement among fans by suggesting the possibility of seeing the beloved original characters from Marvel vs. Capcom 2 return in future Capcom fighting games. His comments, made at EVO 2024, follow the upcoming release of the "Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics," a remastered collection of classic titles including the iconic Marvel vs. Capcom 2.
Matsumoto stated that the return of Amingo, Ruby Heart, and SonSon—the original characters from Marvel vs. Capcom 2—is "always a possibility." He highlighted the collection's potential to introduce these characters to a new generation of players, increasing their popularity and potentially paving the way for their inclusion in future games like Street Fighter 6.
"If there's enough interest," Matsumoto explained, "they could appear in Street Fighter 6 or another fighting game." He emphasized that the re-release of these classic games not only boosts fan familiarity with the characters but also expands Capcom's creative pool, providing a wealth of potential content for future projects.
The "Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection" itself has been a long time coming, with Matsumoto revealing that Capcom had been in discussions with Marvel for several years to make it a reality. He also confirmed Capcom's desire to create a new Versus series title and re-release other legacy fighting games on modern platforms, indicating a broader commitment to revitalizing their fighting game catalog.
Matsumoto acknowledged the challenges involved, including scheduling and collaborations with external parties, but stressed that re-releasing these classic titles is a crucial step in energizing the community and gauging fan interest for future projects. The future of these beloved characters, therefore, rests largely on the enthusiasm of the fans.
