Nicolas Cage Calls AI Performances a 'Dead End', as 'Robots Cannot Reflect the Human Condition'

Nicolas Cage delivered a passionate speech against the use of artificial intelligence in acting, accepting his Best Actor award at the Saturn Awards for his role in Dream Scenario. He argued that allowing AI to influence performances leads actors down "a dead end," asserting that robots are incapable of truly reflecting the human condition.

Cage expressed his belief in the importance of human creativity and emotional expression in art, stating that AI's involvement would replace the "integrity, purity, and truth of art" with mere financial interests. He emphasized the unique role of art in mirroring both the external and internal aspects of the human experience, a task he believes AI is fundamentally unable to accomplish. He warned against AI's potential to diminish the emotional depth and authenticity of performances, resulting in art that lacks heart and ultimately becomes lifeless.

His concerns are echoed by other actors, particularly in the voice acting field, where AI-generated recreations of performances have become more prevalent. Ned Luke (Grand Theft Auto 5) and Doug Cockle (The Witcher) have both expressed concerns about the impact of AI on voice actors' livelihoods and the potential for exploitation.

The film industry's response to AI is divided. While Tim Burton expressed his unease with AI-generated art, describing it as "very disturbing," Zack Snyder advocates for embracing the technology rather than resisting it.
