Pokémon Go Dev Moves to Reassure Players After $3.5 Billion Sale to Monopoly Go! Company Is Confirmed

In a significant move, Niantic Inc. has announced the sale of its games division, encompassing titles like *Pokémon Go*, *Pikmin Bloom*, and *Monster Hunter Now*, along with their respective development teams, to Scopely, a gaming company owned by Saudi Arabia's Savvy Games Group. The deal, valued at $3.5 billion, includes an additional $350 million in cash distribution to Niantic equity holders, bringing the total transaction value to approximately $3.85 billion.

Scopely highlighted the acquired games' impressive performance, boasting over 30 million monthly active users (MAUs), over 20 million weekly active users, and exceeding $1 billion in revenue during 2024. *Pokémon Go*, a flagship title, maintains its position as a top 10 mobile game, attracting over 100 million unique players in 2024.

Niantic emphasized its commitment to the long-term success of its games, stating that the partnership with Scopely will provide the necessary support to ensure their longevity. The company assured players that the games, apps, services, and events will continue under Scopely's investment, managed by the same dedicated teams.

Ed Wu, chief of *Pokémon Go*, addressed player concerns in a separate blog post, emphasizing the positive impact of the partnership with Scopely. He highlighted Scopely's admiration for the *Pokémon Go* community and team, expressing confidence in the game's continued growth and success under Scopely's ownership. Wu reassured players that the core team remains intact, committed to delivering the gameplay they love, and continuing to add new features and events.

Wu further explained Scopely's approach to empowering game teams, allowing them to independently pursue their creative visions and prioritize player experience. He stressed Scopely's long-term focus and commitment to the *Pokémon Go* community, including its real-world events and community programs. He also underscored the continued partnership with The Pokémon Company, ensuring the game's vision remains aligned.

In a separate announcement, Niantic revealed the spin-off of its geospatial AI business into Niantic Spatial Inc., receiving $50 million in investment from Scopely and $200 million from Niantic itself. Niantic Spatial will retain ownership and operation of *Ingress Prime* and *Peridot*.
