Will Wright, the mastermind behind The Sims, recently unveiled more details about his innovative AI life simulation game, Proxi, during a Twitch livestream. This highly anticipated title, initially announced in 2018, is finally taking shape, with Gallium Studio providing continuous development updates. Learn more about Proxi and its unique approach to interactive memories.
A Deeply Personal Gaming Experience
The livestream, hosted by BreakthroughT1D—an organization dedicated to type 1 diabetes research—featured Wright discussing Proxi within their "Dev Diaries" interview series. The series focuses on game developers and their creative journeys.
Wright explained that Proxi is an AI-powered life simulation built directly from the player's memories. Players input personal memories as text, which the game then transforms into animated scenes. These scenes are customizable, allowing for refined simulation of the remembered event using in-game assets. Each new memory ("mem") enhances the game's AI and populates the player's "mind world"—a navigable 3D environment composed of hexagons.
This mind world expands with each added memory, becoming populated by Proxies representing friends and family. Memories are arranged on a timeline, linking them to specific Proxies to accurately reflect the memory's context. Remarkably, these Proxies are even exportable to other game platforms, including Minecraft and Roblox!
The core goal of Proxi is to forge "magical connections with memories, bringing them to life." Wright emphasized his desire for a deeply personal experience, leading to the game's unique memory-based design. He humorously noted his design philosophy: "No game designer has ever gone wrong by overestimating the narcissism of their players." He added, "The more I can make a game about you, the more you'll like it."
Proxi is now featured on Gallium Studio's official website, with platform announcements soon to follow.
