World of Warcraft's Corrupted Blood Incident Returns in Season of Discovery
The infamous Corrupted Blood incident, a notorious event in World of Warcraft's history, has unexpectedly reappeared in the Season of Discovery servers. Players have shared videos showcasing the deadly plague spreading through major cities, sparking both amusement and concern, particularly regarding the impact on Hardcore realms.
The original Corrupted Blood incident stemmed from the Zul'Gurub raid, introduced in Patch 1.7 (Rise of the Blood God) in September 2005. This 20-player instance featured Hakkar the Soulflayer, whose Corrupted Blood spell inflicted damage over time and spread to nearby players. While manageable with sufficient healing in the raid, its accidental spread outside Zul'Gurub, often via infected pets, caused widespread chaos.
The recent resurgence, during Phase 5 of Season of Discovery (September 2024), mirrors the 2005 event. A video posted on r/classicwow by user Lightstruckx depicts the debuff rapidly spreading in Stormwind City's Trade District, incapacitating multiple players. The footage strikingly resembles the original "pet bomb" tactic used to spread the plague across the game world.
Accidental Recreation and Hardcore Concerns
Some players attribute the reappearance to unresolved issues, while others worry about its potential misuse in Hardcore mode. Unlike Season of Discovery, Hardcore mode features permanent character death, making the uncontrolled spread of Corrupted Blood a significant threat.
Despite past attempts to address the issue, the legacy of Corrupted Blood persists. With Season of Discovery's seventh phase slated for early 2025, the timing of Blizzard's fix for this latest outbreak remains uncertain.
