Final Fantasy XIV's North American servers experienced a significant outage on January 5th, impacting all four data centers. Initial reports suggest the cause was a local power outage in Sacramento, California, possibly due to a blown transformer, rather than a DDoS attack. The outage, which began around 8:00 PM Eastern, lasted approximately one hour.
This event follows a year (2024) of persistent DDoS attacks targeting the game's servers, resulting in high latency and disconnections for players. While Square Enix has implemented mitigation strategies, DDoS attacks remain a persistent challenge. Players have sometimes used VPNs to circumvent connection problems.
However, unlike previous incidents, this outage appears to be a localized issue. Reddit users reported hearing a loud explosion in Sacramento, consistent with a transformer failure, around the time of the outage. The fact that European, Japanese, and Oceanic servers remained unaffected further supports this theory.
Currently, Square Enix is investigating the incident. While the Aether, Crystal, and Primal data centers have largely returned to service, the Dynamis data center remains offline at the time of writing. This latest setback comes as Square Enix prepares for ambitious plans in 2025, including the release of Final Fantasy XIV Mobile. The long-term consequences of these recurring server problems remain to be seen.
