With the release of *Civilization 7*, fans of the iconic strategy series are buzzing about the absence of a familiar face: Gandhi. The Indian leader has been a staple in every base game of the franchise since its debut in 1991, famously linked with the legendary, albeit mythical, 'Nuclear Gandhi' bug. However, in *Civilization 7*, Gandhi is noticeably missing, leaving fans curious about his fate.
To shed light on this, I reached out to Ed Beach, the lead designer of *Civilization 7*. Beach offered reassurance to Gandhi enthusiasts, suggesting that the beloved leader might make a comeback as part of future downloadable content (DLC). "So I would say we haven't forgotten about anybody who's been in our game before," Beach stated. He highlighted the broader strategy behind selecting civilizations, noting the absence of Great Britain and England from the base game as another example of planned inclusions in upcoming expansions.
Beach elaborated on Firaxis’ approach to choosing civilizations for *Civilization 7*. "One thing I always think about is, we've had the same situation where iconic civilizations haven't been in our base game before," he explained, citing the absence of Mongolia and Persia in previous titles. He emphasized the necessity of leaving some civilizations out of the base game to introduce fresh and exciting options, while assuring fans that there's a long-term roadmap in place for integrating fan-favorite leaders and civilizations, including Gandhi.

For those eagerly awaiting Gandhi's return, it's worth noting that Carthage and Great Britain will join *Civilization 7* as part of The Crossroads of the World Collection DLC in March 2025, followed by Bulgaria and Nepal.
In the meantime, *Civilization 7* has encountered some mixed user reviews on Steam, primarily due to concerns about the user interface, map variety, and the absence of certain expected features. Addressing these issues might be a priority for Firaxis in the short term. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick, in an interview with IGN, acknowledged the negative feedback but remained optimistic about the game's future, citing encouraging early performance and the potential for the "legacy Civ audience" to embrace the game as they play more.
