PlayStation's New Studio Takes on Bungie's "Gummy Bears" MOBA
A PlayStation studio has reportedly taken over development of Bungie's mysterious MOBA, codenamed "Gummy Bears." Initially conceived at Bungie, this project, rumored to be in development since at least 2020, has undergone a significant shift, transitioning to a new, approximately 40-person PlayStation subsidiary.
This MOBA, targeting a younger audience than Bungie's previous titles, boasts a unique gameplay mechanic. Instead of traditional health bars, "Gummy Bears" utilizes a percentage-based damage system, drawing clear inspiration from the Super Smash Bros. franchise. High damage percentages result in characters being knocked back, and potentially even knocked off the map, mirroring the iconic Smash Bros. mechanic.
The game will feature three standard MOBA character classes: Attack, Defense, and Support, alongside multiple game modes. Its visual style is described as cozy, vibrant, and "lo-fi," a stark departure from Bungie's previous, more mature aesthetics. This stylistic choice aims to attract a younger demographic.
While the release date remains uncertain, the project's transition to a new PlayStation studio suggests a potentially lengthy development period ahead. The shift aligns with recent announcements of a new PlayStation studio establishment in Los Angeles, further solidifying the location of "Gummy Bears'" development.
