Simply put, there's nothing on PlayStation 5 that comes close to the experience of Forza Horizon 5. While The Crew Motorfest has adopted a festival approach, making it more akin to the Forza Horizon series than its predecessors, it still doesn't quite match up. Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown, on the other hand, attempted to build on the MMO racing genre but fell short with its always-online requirement, lacking the seamless offline and online play that Forza Horizon has offered since 2014's Forza Horizon 2. Need for Speed Unbound, although boasting an impressive customization suite, focuses more on high-speed pursuits, making it less of a direct competitor.
Forza Horizon 5 stands unrivaled as the modern open-world racing champion, and it's now available on PlayStation 5 for the first time. Players are diving into its vast, beautiful Mexico map, enjoying its drift-friendly vehicle dynamics, and exploring a garage with over 900 cars, including cult favorites that are exclusive to this game. The reaction from new PlayStation users has been a delight to witness.
The team at Playground Games has been eagerly anticipating this influx of new players. Art Director Don Arceta expressed his excitement about the new audience, many of whom will be experiencing Forza Horizon for the first time. He's particularly interested in seeing the creations that PlayStation 5 players will make using the game's extensive Event Lab customization tools.
"We have over 800 props now in the Event Lab, and just seeing what the community's done with that feature and mode – and the creativity of the community – it's just mind-blowing," Arceta shares. "I'm super excited, once we get into the PlayStation 5 users, about what they'll build, and the creativity that will come from that community."
He also mentions that players can expect some fantastic Halo content on PlayStation, thanks to the Event Lab props.
The port to PlayStation 5 has been technically impeccable, matching the quality of its Xbox and PC counterparts. This achievement is impressive, given the game's size and the fact that its engine had never been used on a PlayStation console before. Arceta credits Panic Button, in collaboration with Turn 10 and Playground Games, for their amazing work on the port.
As a car enthusiast, the Forza series is unparalleled in its offering of a diverse range of cars, from the well-known to the obscure. Lead Game Designer David Orton highlights the game's staggering breadth, emphasizing the freedom players have to enjoy the game in their own way, whether it's road racing, track racing, photography, or creating content with the Event Lab.
"Horizon is the space where really everyone is welcome, and there's something in it for everyone," Orton states. "I think the feeling of people going in and realizing this is more than just a racing game is what's really exciting for me."
Both Arceta and Orton hope that new players will be pleasantly surprised by Forza Horizon 5, leading to engagement and a deeper appreciation for the game. They are excited about the potential of bringing in a whole new audience of players who may have never experienced a Forza title before.
For racing game fans, the arrival of Forza Horizon 5 on PlayStation 5 breaks down a significant barrier. As car culture and console loyalty often go hand in hand, this move is a big step forward. Let's hope it's not the last.
