Frostpunk 1886 Is a Remake of the First Game Due Out 2027, Dev Insists It Will Continue to Update Frostpunk 2

11 bit studios has recently unveiled Frostpunk 1886, a highly anticipated remake of the original game, slated for release in 2027. This announcement comes just over six months after the launch of Frostpunk 2. With the first Frostpunk having debuted in 2018, this remake will mark nearly a decade since the initial release, showcasing the studio's ongoing commitment to the franchise.

For the development of Frostpunk 1886, 11 bit studios has chosen to harness the power of Unreal Engine 5. This decision follows the cessation of development on their proprietary Liquid Engine, which previously powered both the original Frostpunk and This War of Mine. The shift to Unreal Engine 5 is part of a broader effort to provide a new foundation for the series, aiming to enhance the legacy of the first game with advanced technology.

Frostpunk is renowned for its unique blend of city-building and survival elements, set in an alternate history during a global volcanic winter in the late 19th century. Players are tasked with constructing and managing a city, making critical decisions on resource allocation, survival strategies, and exploration beyond their city's borders to find survivors and essential supplies.

IGN's review of the original Frostpunk awarded it a commendable 9/10, praising its "engaging and unique, if occasionally unintuitive, strategy game" qualities. In contrast, Frostpunk 2 received an 8/10, noted for its "larger scale [that] is less intimate but more socially and politically complex than the original."

Despite the focus on the new remake, 11 bit studios remains dedicated to supporting Frostpunk 2 with ongoing free major content updates, a console launch, and additional DLCs. The studio emphasized that Frostpunk 1886 is not merely a visual update but a comprehensive reimagining that introduces new content, mechanics, laws, and an exciting new "Purpose path," ensuring a fresh experience for both new and veteran players.

The use of Unreal Engine 5 in Frostpunk 1886 also paves the way for the game to become a dynamic, expandable platform. This includes the much-requested mod support, which was previously unattainable due to the limitations of the original engine, as well as the potential for future DLC content.

11 bit studios envisions a future where Frostpunk 2 and Frostpunk 1886 evolve concurrently, each offering a distinct yet interconnected vision of survival in the harsh, unforgiving cold. Additionally, the studio is actively working on another project, The Alters, set to be released in June.
