HBO Max Rebranding: Warner Bros. Discovery Reveals Name Change Back to Max

By AlexisMay 19,2025

Warner Bros. Discovery has announced that Max will revert to its former name, HBO Max, starting this summer. This rebranding comes just two years after the platform transitioned from HBO Max to simply Max. HBO Max is renowned for hosting acclaimed series such as Game of Thrones, The White Lotus, The Sopranos, The Last of Us, House of the Dragon, and The Penguin.

The company highlighted that its streaming business has seen a significant turnaround, achieving nearly $3 billion in profitability within the last two years. Additionally, WBD reported adding 22 million subscribers over the past year and is on track to reach over 150 million subscribers by the end of 2026. This growth is attributed to strategic focus on programming that resonates most with audiences, including HBO series, recent blockbuster movies, docuseries, select reality shows, and both Max and local originals, while scaling back on less engaging genres.

The decision to revert to HBO Max stems from the strong association of the HBO brand with premium, high-quality content that viewers are willing to pay for. In a market flooded with streaming options, consumers are increasingly seeking out distinctive and superior content rather than sheer volume. WBD noted that consumer preferences have shifted towards wanting better content, not more of it, and HBO has consistently delivered on this front for over 50 years.

By reintroducing the HBO brand into HBO Max, WBD aims to enhance the platform's appeal and underscore its commitment to delivering unique, high-caliber content. This move also reflects WBD's ongoing strategy adjustments based on consumer data and insights to optimize its positioning for future success.

David Zaslav, President and CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, emphasized that the growth of their global streaming service is driven by the quality of their programming. He stated, "Today, we are bringing back HBO, the brand that represents the highest quality in media, to further accelerate that growth in the years ahead."

JB Perrette, President and CEO of Streaming, added that the focus remains on what sets their service apart: delivering content that is distinct and exceptional for both adults and families. He remarked, "It’s really not subjective, not even controversial – our programming just hits different."

Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content, reinforced that the rebranding to HBO Max better reflects their current consumer proposition and reaffirms their commitment to content that is recognized as unique and worth paying for.
